H.I.P.P.Y.
Home Instructional Program for Preschool Youngsters

A home-based readiness program for 3, 4 and 5-year-olds.

The program prepares children for school and helps to enable their parents to become their child’s first teacher. The parent continues to be involved with the child and the school as the child begins kindergarten.

The HIPPY program was developed by the National Council of Jewish Women’s Research Institute for Innovation in Education at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel.

It started there in 1969 as a research and demonstration project and has been operating in the United States since 1984.

Arkansas HIPPY programs were started in 1986 and expanded in 1990. The Arkansas River Education Service Cooperative started its present HIPPY program in 1991. The program works with seven school districts within the cooperative’s area Arkansas, Grant and Jefferson counties.

School districts participating in HIPPY are Altheimer Unified, Dollarway, Pine Bluff, Poyen, Sheridan, Stuttgart and White Hall.

Employing 28 home-based educators, the local HIPPY program serves more than 650 children. As a 30-week program following the school calendar, it brings trained, home-based educators into parents’ homes with structured curriculum to help prepare the children for kindergarten.

Parents are provided with daily instructional packets that include educational and enrichment activities that will prepare their preschool children with school readiness skills. These skills include eye-hand coordination, visual discrimination, spatial perception, tactile, cognitive and other activities to help develop critical thinking skills.

Parents are encouraged to work with their children for 15 minutes a day, five days a week for 30 days.

Group meetings are held once a month for role-play and enrichment programs covering topics such as health, safety, stress and job training or subjects that interest parents.

Anyone interested in HIPPY may call the Arkansas River Education Service Cooperative at 535-2681.
