Pine Bluff
grew up around the
seat of government - the county courthouse. The county courthouse is far
more important than its function
as the administrative center of each county. The dominant position it
takes within the city of Pine
Bluff is very apparent.
In 1976 a
fire, partially destroying the old building, brought out the strong feelings the
people of Jefferson County have for their courthouse and its location. These
feelings were overwhelmingly expressed when the populace voted 7,531 to 733 to
keep the courthouse in the same location.
Only the
center portion of the 1856 courthouse with its bell tower was retained in the
new design. The courthouse was finished in time for the county's
150th
anniversary. An extensive program with a parade and addresses by prominent
citizens marked the opening of the new building on May 8, 1980.
The citizens
of Pine Bluff have an attachment and love for its courthouse. At some point in
time, almost every citizen must find its way to the courthouse.
