The Delta Rivers Nature Center is located at 1400 Black Dog Road at
Regional Park. The $5 million facility was funded by the Arkansas Game
and Fish Commission.
The center offers a taste of the natural habitat in an
interactive museum setting. The center opened in July 2001 and has over
40,000 visitors a year. It also has interactive educational exhibits,
large meeting and classrooms, a working laboratory, gift shop, two
aquariums totaling about 20,000 gallons of water, live and mounted
animal exhibits and a native plant, butterfly and hummingbird garden.
The nature center also offers a unique blend of education and
entertainment geared toward the entire family. Traditional programs such
as hunter and boating education are available, along with nationally
acclaimed conservation education activities such as Project WILD
(Wildlife in Learning Design) and the Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs
program.
The trail system has 0.75 miles of “improved” asphalt and
boardwalk trails that are in compliance with the Americans with
Disabilities Act. There’s also a two-story wildlife observation tower
and multiple observation areas.
The Wetlands demonstration consist of showing native
aquatic and semi-aquatic plants in a natural setting and a bridge over
the center to allow a view other than the normal bank view.
Volunteer
opportunities are available for interested people at the Delta Rives Nature
Center:
Education — program, lectures and
classes at the center and in the community.
Guided Tours — take visitors and
students along trails and exhibits.
Animal care — feeding, cleaning and
watering various animals.
Aquarium care — maintenance and feeding
or aquarium inhabitants.
Information desk — help people find
out more about the center and all it has to offer.
Gardening/Landscaping — learn about native
plants while helping in the greenhouse, butterfly garden and trails.
Gift Shop — help the center reach its goals by
helping visitors select educational items that encourage them
to learn more about the center.
For details, call
534-0011. Eric Maynard is the center director.
Rusty Scarborough is the education program coordinator.
Pine Bluff Area Parks
There are eight lighted
tennis courts at the city-owned Bloom Tennis Center at West 21st Avenue
and Hickory Street.
The private Eden Park Country Club at West 41st
Avenue and Elm Street has five outdoor and two indoor courts.
For golfers, there are three 18-hole
courses in the Pine Bluff area. Harbor Oaks is located in Regional
Park. Managed by a PGA pro, Harbor Oaks features a driving range, a
restaurant and a fully stocked pro shop, and is a public course. The other two
are Pine Bluff Country Club at 1100 W. 46th Ave. and Rosswood Country
Club on 7619 Rosswood Road. Pine Bluff also has a public 9-hole course at
the Jaycees Golf Course in Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Rhinehart Road.
Motorboating is a
popular pastime on Lake Langhoffer and the Arkansas River with points of access
to the river at numerous Army Corps of Engineers parks, including Sheppard
Island Park northeast of Pine Bluff, Saint Marie Park adjacent to the
Port of Pine Bluff and Regional Park.
The 135-acre
Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Rhinehart Road also offers two softball
fields, two lakes, several areas of playground equipment and picnic tables.
The park’s two
lakes, home for several flocks of ducks and geese, are stocked with bass bream
and catfish, and are open for fishing by those 12-year-old and under and senior
citizens.
Regional Park Complex,
just north of the Martha Mitchell Expressway on the Arkansas River, has one of
the best softball complexes in the state. The Civitan Playground has playground
equipment. Several activities and competitions are scheduled yearly at the park.
The park includes a picnic area, complete with some covered tables and grills,
and a Radio Control Model Airplane Flying facility, the facility is maintained
by the Pine Bluff Radio Control Model Airplane Club (PBRCMAC) and is free to the
public. Proper insurance is the only requirement Located on the right as you
enter the park just past the fishing pond.
The Ben Pearson
Memorial Archery Range is one of Regional Park’s most popular areas. The
40-acre range, one of the top ranges in the state, has 56 targets scattered
throughout a natural setting.
An amphitheater
for community use is another popular feature at the park.
The park’s 54-pad
recreational vehicle park has electric and water hookups.
Spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Regional Park is
fisherman friendly and has a busy boat ramp.
It was the site of more than 40 fishing tournaments recently, four of
which were national tournaments.
The Pine Bluff area
also has the Packingtown Community Park, 3800 E. Pullen St. The park
covers three city blocks and has a playground, half-court basketball court and
parking area.
Cane
Creek State Park
Five miles south of Star City in Lincoln County is Cane Creek State Park.
This recreational
area is a 2,054-acre park located on the western shoreline of Cane Creek Lake.
First land acquisition funding was appropriated in 1973, but the project was
contested in court, and it was December 1976 before land acquisition could
continue. In 1988, $846,000 in state funds were released for the development of
the park. The money was matched with a federal grant from the Soil Conservation
Service for $1.7 million. The money was used to build the first phase of the
project.
The park, open since July 8, 1992, has a visitor information
center, bathhouse, restroom, pavilion, 30 class-A campsites, 23 picnic sites, a
boat-launching ramp, maintenance building, utilities, two handicapped-accessible
fishing piers and a hiking trail.
The facility has added a new pavilion with a restroom
and additional employee residences.
There is a bike and kayak trail, which has proven to be
a huge success. The kayak trail is located near the lake so people get an
opportunity to view the natural resources.
Campers can now enjoy the new Rent-an-RV at Cane Creek. The
30-foot RV features heat and air conditioning; beds for eight persons; a fully
equipped kitchen; a TV/VCR/DVD. The units rent for $65/night.
The park is expected to attract 75,000 visitors a year. Park
office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the park can be reached
at (870) 628-4714.

Museums
Arkansas
Railroad Museum
The Arkansas Railroad
Museum is the home of the only tow remaining Cotton Belt steam engines, Engine
819 and Engine 336.
Engine 819 was built by the St. Louis Southwestern Railway
Company (Cotton Belt Route) at its Pine Bluff shops in 1942. The mighty
locomotive ruled the rails for a dozen years before being replace by diesel
locomotives. The engine was donated to the city of Pine Bluff in 1955 and
reposed in Oakland Park until 1983 when the Cotton Belt Rail Historical Society,
Inc. with the help of the Cotton Belt Railroad brought it out of the park for
restoration. It's first trips were to Fordyce and Little Rock in 1986. It later
made trips to Tyler, Texas and St. Louis.
Engine 336 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1909.
The Museum is the only place in the country that houses an
ALCO RSD-12 and ALCO RSD-15 side by side. The RSD-15 or "Alligator" was the last
locomotive of this type built by ALCO. There are only 5 of this model known to
exist. Other locomotives on display include GP-30, EMD-E8, two 25 ton GE's and
the last Union Pacific C-630.
Also on display is a complete steam wrecker with related work
cars, various other railroad cars, numerous display of railroad memorabilia and
model railroad layouts.
The Arkansas Railroad Museum is operated by the Cotton Belt
Rail Historical Society, Inc. by volunteers

Bayou
Bartholomew
Winding all through
Southeast Arkansas is Bayou Bartholomew, the nation’s longest such waterway. The
fishing and frog-gigging along the bayou are legendary, and it remains natural
with few improvements, though locally used access areas abound under the myriad
of bridges that follow Bartholomew’s meandering course in to Louisiana.

Art
The Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 S.
Main St., was founded in 1968 and became a commission of Pine Bluff in 1971. It
is operated for the benefit of all citizens of the 10 counties of Southeast
Arkansas. The mission of the Arts and Science Center is to provide opportunities
for the practice, teaching, performance, enjoyment and understanding of the arts
and sciences.
The Arts and Science Center is open Monday through Friday, 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
General operating funds are provided, in part, by the Arkansas Arts
Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. It offers memberships, which
also provide general operating funds.
The Arts and Science Center is accredited by the American
Association of Museums and houses a permanent collection that focuses on
African-American artists, Arkansas artists and art of the Delta culture.
Exhibits on loan from others, as well as the permanent collection, are
periodically rotated through the four galleries: Altheimer, International Paper,
Kennedy and Simmons First. The Irene Rosenzweig Endowment sponsors a biannual
juried exhibition. Admission to the galleries is free.
The Arts and Science Center offers year-round education
classes for youth, including acting classes, theatre camp, summer scholars,
ARTshop and second Saturday scholars. Transportation and financial aid are
available. Classes for adults are offered periodically.
The performing arts department offers an annual theatre
season with productions featuring youth, teens and adults. This year’s season
begins with the musical “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” set for July 28-31 and
Aug. 5-7. The remainder of the season is “A Company of Wayward Saints,” Oct.
13-16 and 21-23; “Christmas Memories,” Dec. 9-11; “The Rainmaker,” Jan. 12-15
and 20-22; “A Raisin in the Sun,” Feb. 23-26 and March 3-5; and “Johnny Moonbeam
and the Silver Arrow,” April 21-22 and 28-30. Productions are held in the
Catherine M. Bellamy Theatre, which seats 240 people.
The African-American Advisory Committee sponsors several
events throughout the year, including a Black History program, a multi-cultural
event, and most notably, Juneteenth.
The Arts and Science Center sponsors several fund-raisers
each year. Annual events include “A Taste of the Wild Life,” a wild game dinner,
auction and dance, and “The Art of Adornment,” an educational forum with lunch
and exhibits. Biannual evens are “Potpourri,” dinner and silent and live
auctions, and “Razzle Dazzle,” a song-and-dance revue by local talent.

Community Band
Under the direction of
Richard Campbell who replaced the retiring Bud Childers in 2005, the Pine Bluff
Community Band is a volunteer organization made up of musicians from Pine Bluff
and surrounding communities.
Members are comprised of both professional and amateur
musicians. Several retired band directors are also involved with group
activities.
The band performs at The Band Museum Concert Hall at 423 Main
St. and at other public functions throughout Jefferson County. The hall can
accommodate more than 300 people. The band practices regularly in the recital
hall of The Band Museum, which sponsors the group. It meets at 5:30 p.m. on
Thursdays. New musicians are invited to join the practices regardless of how
long it has been since they played.
The band plays a variety of music, including but not
restricted to, marches, overtures, Broadway hits, pop and patriotic music. The
band performs at civic events, churches and retirement homes and gives free
public concerts.
Civic organizations wishing to have the band perform at a
particular function may call the museum at 534-4676 or visit the Web site at
www.bandmuseum.org.
Jerry G. Horne is director/curator of The Band Museum.

Port City Players
The Port
City Players Inc. is a nonprofit community theater company composed of 35 or 40
professionals from all walks of life.
These dedicated individuals strive to promote and produce quality theatrical
entertainment.
According to the group’s executive director, Gardenia Ambler,
the Port City Players is open to anyone who enjoys working in the visual and
performing arts, as well as any technical aspect of production.
The organization also seeks writers who would like to see
their work performed on stage. The group, organized 23 years ago, is a nonprofit
and non-salaried organization.
In 2005, by public demand, the group will once again present
“Ebony Nights” in dinner theater. There are also plans to present “The Biblical
Prophecy” during the Easter season, according to Ambler.
Details: Call Ambler at 536-2031.
The Art Krewe
The Art Krewe is a volunteer group for the Arts and Science Center for Southeast
Arkansas and serves to supply the organization with volunteers necessary to
carry out its many programs and special events.
These volunteers primarily support fund-raisers, receptions
and volunteer recognition. Joining the Art Krewe does not obligate a person to
volunteer for any event; it only adds that person’s name to the list of
volunteers to call for help during the year. Art Krewe is open to the community.
The annual fee is $5 to cover mailing costs.
Anyone interested in joining may call Trudy Redus,
special events coordinator, at 536-3375
